History

Welcome all Historians
Welcome to our school History page! I am Mrs Rees and as well as being Year 3's class teacher, I have the pleasure of being History subject leader. I am hugely passionate about bringing History alive for all of our pupils and helping them to discover just how exciting and inspiring the subject can be. History is much more than simply learning about dates and facts – it is about people, places, decisions and events that continue to shape the world we live in today. At our school, we want to enthuse our pupils with a love of learning about the past, to nurture their curiosity and to give them the skills to ask questions, think critically, and make meaningful connections between then and now. My role is to champion History within our school and to share my passion for the subject with both pupils and staff alike.

Intent
Our intent is to develop every child’s historical knowledge and understanding so they leave our school with a secure grasp of the past and how it links to the present. We want children to build a strong sense of chronology, understanding how different events, eras and individuals fit together across time. Through our curriculum, pupils are encouraged to think deeply about cause and consequence, similarities and differences, and how evidence helps us to understand the past. By developing this strong historical framework, we aim for pupils to grow into reflective and curious learners who appreciate the importance of History not just as a school subject, but as a vital part of their own cultural and personal identity.

Implementation
We have developed a thorough and robust programme of study which introduces pupils to important historical events, significant individuals, and key eras in British and world History. A strong focus is placed on the lasting legacy these events and people have had on shaping life today. Threaded throughout our curriculum are key historical concepts such as homes, travel, conflict, power and society. These concepts are revisited as the children journey through school, enabling them to deepen and strengthen their understanding as they build connections across different time periods. Developing a strong sense of chronology sits at the heart of our approach, helping children to see how the past fits together in a meaningful way. All teaching is carefully adapted to ensure it is inclusive, and the needs of SEN pupils are thoughtfully planned for so that every child can access and enjoy History. Learning is enriched through workshops, hands-on experiences, and trips that bring the subject to life. As Subject Leader, I also play an active role in inspiring and supporting staff with planning, teaching and assessment to ensure consistency and high standards across the school.

Impact
Through high-quality teaching and a curriculum designed to be accessible for all, our pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of the past. They gain knowledge of important historical events, the influence of significant individuals, and the changes that took place during key historical eras. More importantly, they come to appreciate the impact these have had on shaping Britain and the wider world as we know it today. Our children leave us with a strong chronological understanding and the ability to apply historical concepts thoughtfully, giving them the confidence to analyse and question the past. Most of all, we hope they leave with a genuine enthusiasm for History – one that will stay with them long after they leave our classrooms.

"History gives children the chance to step into the shoes of those who came before them – helping them to understand the past, learn from it, and shape a better future."
