Reading

Reading in year 2

We teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a validated systematic synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Foundation Stage 2 and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression (attached below), which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school.

In the first term of year 2, children review and secure this knowledge, and we work towards the children becoming fluent readers.  To strengthen this knowledge your child has four 30 minute phonics and spelling lessons a week as well as Writing lessons.  In addition, a weekly shared read in which they are taught and practise comprehension skills. They are listened to read three times a week by Mrs White/Mrs Crawford, Miss Armstrong, Miss Clemenson, Mrs Ashford or Mrs Whittaker in a grouped reading session of 30 minutes. The books your child reads are  phonically decodable and closely matched to their phonics knowledge. In these sessions we focus on blending to read, understanding vocabulary and developing reading fluently and with expression. We will also practise comprehension skills such as retrieving or inferring answers to questions; discussing features and structure and predicting. For more information, please visit the Reading page within the Our Curriculum tab.

Once your child has mastered phonics and is reading fluently with good understanding, they will no longer bring home a Little Wandle phonically decodable book. They will move onto the book band books from Lime upwards. They will be encouraged to read novels and continue to develop a deep love of reading for pleasure.

In the Spring and Summer terms, children will have 5 shared reading lessons to further develop their fluency, expression and understanding of texts. We use the 'Steps to Read' programme from the company 'Literacy Counts'.
